Biography of Roberto Capucci

Roberto Capucci, an Italian fashion designer, was born on December 2, 1930 in Rome, Italy. He studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti, the Roman Academy of Fine Arts. Capucci began his career working for designer Emilio Schuberth.

At the age of 20, Capucci faced opposition from other fashion designers who did not want his creations to be showcased at a fashion show organized by a Florentine businessman. However, the press came to his rescue, insisting on a separate show the following day. Capucci's dresses were immediately sold out, showcasing his exceptional talent.

Capucci's designs were often described as sculptural creations made from fabric. His dresses transformed their wearers into magical beings with their unique shapes, colors, and cuts. In 1950, Capucci opened his own fashion house, which quickly gained recognition in Italy.

In 1956, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Venice and received a letter of admiration from French couturier Christian Dior. Capucci's iconic red dress with a nine-layered skirt, resembling a blooming rose, gained eternal fame through a Cadillac advertisement. Today, this dress can be seen in the Roberto Capucci Museum.

In 1962, Capucci opened a fashion salon in Paris on Cambon Street, but in 1968, he returned to Rome and settled on Gregoriana Street. He refused to limit his approach to the female figure to a curved cylinder, instead considering his work an exploration of form. His clean and refined collections led to increased sales, but Capucci was not fond of publicity and did not seek mass production of his designs.

Around 1980, Capucci partially retired, no longer dedicating himself to work from morning till evening. However, he continued to create numerous fashionable designs throughout the 1980s. From 1982 to 1996, Capucci presented one collection per year, organizing shows in different cities around the world.

In 1995, at the age of 65, Capucci accepted an invitation from the Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade to become a professor in China. He taught at universities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. In 2003, the Milan Fashion Week marked Capucci's return to the fashion world after many years, with the designer himself sitting in the front row. He also contributed to the creation of the staff uniforms for Jet Airways, India's largest airline.

Although Capucci gained fame for his incredible evening and ball gowns, both traditional and sensational, he was also known for his passion for unconventional materials. He used pebbles from gardens to adorn one collection, developed special transparent plastic pockets filled with colored liquids for another, and created beaded embroidery that replicated the effect of phosphorescence for yet another collection.
